Die legendäre "Porgy and Bess "-Inszenierung von Robert Breen, die in den 50-er Jahren auf Europa-Tournee ging, versetzte Europa in Begeisterung und löste auch in Deutschland nach den dürren Jahren der Illegalität ein wahres Jazzfieber aus. 1952 war das Ensemble bei den Berliner Festwochen zu Gast. Im Titania-Palast, dem damaligen Spielort der Berliner Philharmoniker, entstand der vorliegende Mitschnitt, in dem sich auf einzigartige Weise Opernund Jazzgeschichte verbanden. Die Gastgeber stellten das RIAS-Unterhaltungsorchester zur Verfügung, das unter der Leitung von Alexander Smallens, dem Dirigenten der Uraufführung, zur Hochform auflief. Auch der Chor unter der Leitung von Eva Jessye sowie einige Nebendarsteller, darunter Helen Dowdy, bürgten für Originalflair. Als wahrer Glücksfall erwies sich die Solistenbesetzung, zu der neben Cab Calloway und der jungen Leontyne Price auch deren Ehemann WilliamWarfield in der Partie des Porgy gehörte.
