The group The Tallis Scholars were founded in 1973 by their artistic director Peter Philipps. Peter Philipps had completely dedicated himself to the music of the Reneaissance, with heart and soul. After Philipps had received a scholarship to Oxford in 1972, he studied Renaissance music with David Wulstan and Denis Arnols, and gathered experience in this time directing small vocal ensembles and undertaking remote areas of the repertoire. This work culminated with the founding of the Tallis Scholars in 1973. Meanwhile, the ensembles has presented 1600 concerts and over 50 recordings. In 1980 Peter Philipps and Steve Smith founded Gimell Records, whose first prouction took place on the 22nd and 23rd of March 1980 in the chapel of Merton College, Oxford. All recordings of the Tallis Scholars since have been released on this label.
