Bei der vorliegenden Aufführung handelt es sich um Kenneth MacMillans legendäre Choreografie zur Musik von Sergeij Prokofjew, für das Royal Ballet. Die Uraufführung mit Rudolf Nureyev und Margot Fonteyn in den Titelrollen fand 1965 statt, das Ballett erlebte seither international große Erfolge.
Die hier live aus dem Opernhaus Covent Garden in die Kinos weltweit übertragene Produktion von 2012 zeigt Lauren Cuthbertson als Julia und Federico Bonelli als Romeo im umwerfend und hinreißend getanzten Zentrum der opulent gestalteten Handlung der beiden rivalisierenden Familien Montague und Capulet.
