Wagner and the Violin
Chamber music and Richard Wagner?! What seems contradicting at first glance is yet being proven with this recording by Gerald Schubert, longtime-member of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and Bernadette Bartos, sought-after pianist and Lied accompanist: Wagners instrumental understanding of the vocal parts of his great music dramas and his own transcriptions prompted many of his contemporaries to their own composition of arrangements and paraphrases. Felix Mottl, from 1886 to 1906 conductor of the Bayreuth festival, Joachim Raff, Alexander Ritter and August Wilhelmj contributed transcriptions for violin and piano of motifs from Tannhäuser, Tristan und Isolde, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Siegfried and Parsifal as well as the Wesendonck-Lieder.
Violinist Gerald Schubert was born in Vienna in 1956. He received his first violin lessons under the tutorship of his own father who had been a student of the legendary violin virtuoso Vása Príhoda and of Willi Boskovsky, the longtime concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Schubert further on studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Professor Josef Sivo (whose assistant he became later on) and with Alfred Staar. He participated in master classes and Chamber Music classes with Joseph Calvet and Oleg Maisenberg.
In 1981, Schubert worked as concertmaster of the Lockenhaus Strings as part of the Chamber Music Festival at Lockenhaus under the direction of Gidon Kremer. Many concerts and recordings led Schubert to the music centers of Europe, the United States and Asia. Between 1974 and 1976, he was a member of the Jeunesse World Orchestra. Since 1979, he is a member of the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera and also since 1982, he is leading violinist of the second violins of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Next to several of his colleagues of the Vienna Philharmonic, he also performed with renowned pianists such as Yefim Bronfman, Harald Ossberger, Claus Christian Schuster and Bernadette Bartos.
Born in 1982, pianist Bernadette Bartos studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Imola Joó, Heinz Medjimorec and Stephan Möller. She graduated her master studies in Vocal Coaching «Lied und Oratorium» at the Vienna Conservatory Private University with a thesis about Gustav Mahler and the «Des Knaben Wunderhorn» collection. Her academic training as a piano accompanist specialized in «Lied» led her to Roger Vignoles and Simon Lepper at the Royal College of Music in London. She took part in several master classes with Klaus Hellwig, Christopher Elton, Noel Flores, Joaquin Soriano, Helmut Deutsch, Roger Vignoles and Graham Johnson.
Since autumn 2012, she works at the Lied and singing classes at the University Mozarteum Salzburg. In 2012, she won the special prize of the «International Schubert Competition Lied Duo» Dortmund, accompanying baritone Matthias Winckhler. On the Gramola label, she already recorded a CD with songs by Benedict Randhartinger (Gramola 98970), accompanying baritone Wolfgang Holzmair, which was released in March 2013.
