On her third CD at Gramola (to date: Schubert, 2 Sonatas, Gramola 98808 and Bach Goldberg Variations, Gramola 98846), the pianist Ingrid Marsoner plays the Piano Concerto No. 2 in A minor by Hummel and Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major together with the Symphony Orchestra of Biel (Switzerland) conducted by Thomas Rösner. This combination enables an interesting comparison to be made between two works serving as instruments of the virtuosity of their composers on the piano and representing in their different characters the piano concerto after Mozart in Vienna. Whereas tauter motif work predominates in the case of Beethoven, Hummel, who was committed to Italian opera, prefers song-like melodies and seems to be a harbinger of Chopin.
