Benedict Randhartinger, born in Ruprechtshofen in 1802, was accepted into the Vienna Boys' Choir as a ten-year-old and a substitute for the five-year-older Franz Schubert. His subsequent career as a singer, composer and court music director found expression in an incomparably comprehensive overall oeuvre. The baritone Wolfgang Holzmair and Bernadette Bartos, piano, interpret selected songs by the Lower Austrian composer, who was highly popular during the Biedermeier period, but is almost neglected today and whose compositions set to music works by authors such as Ernst von Schulze, Heinrich Heine, Franz Grillparzer or Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
Wolfgang Holzmair, born in Vöcklabruck and trained in singing by Hilde Rössel-Majdan and Erik Werba at the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Vienna, is one of the leading baritones of our time. Besides his comprehensive interest in song, he is also an indispensible component of international productions on the opera stage, which has earned him considerable recognition in co-operation with Graeme Jenkins, William Christie, Seiji Ozawa, Herbert Blomstedt, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos or Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Numerous CD recordings for Philips, Tudor, nightingale, cpo and naïve underline his individual class as well as his chamber music skill. He has also been awarded a Pasticcio Prize and a Grammy (for Brahms' A German Requiem conducted by Herbert Blomstedt).
Bernadette Bartos completed her piano training with Heinz Medjimorec, Imola Joó and Stephan Möller at the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Vienna in 2010, then to receive lessons in piano accompaniment with Roger Vignoles and Simon Lepper at the Royal College of Music in London. Prominent stages in her busy concert activity were her debut in the Grand Hall of the Viennese Musikverein in 1999 and her first performance in the ORF Radio Culture House in 2001. Since then, Bartos can be heard at different musical festivals and in concert halls throughout the world. Master classes with Klaus Hellwig, Christopher Elton, Noel Flores, Risto Kyrö, Helmut Deutsch, Peter Schreier, Angelika Kirchschlager, Bernarda Fink and Michael Schade round off her multifaceted training.
