“One should sing with the fingers,” or “If you want to play piano, you need to learn to sing” —such statements and similar quotes by Frederic Chopin have been passed down by many of his students from their piano lessons with him. With a nearly Baroque-Classical aesthetic, he preached the idea of an analogy between music and language, and from this he paid meticulous attention to phrasing and articulation. It thus comes as no surprise that contemporaries and epigonic composers happily used the vocal habitus of many of his piano works to arrange them as actual art songs. Several particularly successful examples, written by Luigi Bordèse, Pauline Viardot and anonymous composers were compiled for the present CD by pianist Wolfgang Brunner, long-standing director of the Salzburg Hofmusik, with singers Lydia Teuscher, Olivia Vermeulen, Karol Kozlowski und Andreas Schmidt.

Born in Freiburg, Germany, soprano Lydia Teuscher was initially an ensemble member of the Dresden State Opera. Engagements at the Berlin Staatsoper unter den Linden, the Bolshevik Theater in Moscow, the Comic Opera Berlin, the Bavarian State Opera, as well as the opera festivals in Aix-en-Provence, Glyndebourne and the Seiji Ozawa Festival in Japan.
Teuscher has a special passion for lieder and chamber music. Numerous competitions, invitations to festivals large and small, as well as recordings bear witness to her considerable stylistic breadth.
She has taught at the Mannheim University of Music since 2018.

Dutch mezzo-soprano Olivia Vermeulen is celebrated internationally for her versatility. As a sought-after soloist, she can be heard on major stages such as the Opéra National de Paris, the Berliner Staatsoper and the Oper Zürich. Her repertoire ranges from the early Baroque to the present. She collaborates regularly with René Jacobs, with whom she has sung the most important Mozart roles in her Fach. She made her Berlin Philharmonic debut in 2018 under Daniel Harding. In 2020, her solo CD Dirty Minds was released on the Challenge Records label, with a release concert at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.

Karol Kozłowski completed his studies with distinction at the Gdańsk Academy of Music (2007). His first full-time position was at the Wrocłav Opera. He has also given guest performances at the Latvian National Opera, the Brno National Theater, and the Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich.
Music of the Baroque era is an important pillar of Kozłowski’s work. He has sung under the direction of Christophe Rousset, Konrad Junghänel, Andrew Parrot and Helmuth Rilling, among other conductors. The role of the Evangelist in Bach’s Passions has become an important part of his repertoire.

Andreas Schmidt is one of the most prominent singers of his generation. He first studied piano, organ, and conducting before studying voice with Ingeborg Reichelt in Düsseldorf and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in Berlin. As winner of the German Music Competition, he was immediately hired by the Deutsche Oper Berlin. There, he commenced his worldwide career, which has brought him to the largest opera houses and most famous festivals in the world, where he has performed with nearly all of the major orchestras and great conductors. Numerous radio and television recordings, from Bach to Rihm, document his artistic breadth, as do the over 130 recordings for Deutsche Grammophon, BMG, Philips, Decca, Sony, EMI, and other labels.

Wolfgang Brunner studied music education at the Munich Musikhochschule, as well as piano and harpsichord at Mozarteum Salzburg. His teachers were, among others, Kenneth Gilbert, Glen Wilsen, Richard Fuller and Nikolaus Harnoncourt.
Since 1985 he has taught at Mozarteum Salzburg Historical Keyboard Instruments, Continuo and Piano. In 1991 he founded the ensemble “Salzburger Hofmusik”, the main focus of which is music from the 17th - 19th century on period instruments, with special attention to the music of the Salzburg Court.
Wolfgang Brunner recordings include multiple premiere recordings such as the piano works by Anton Bruckner, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Songs by Carl Orff and the opera Arminio by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber.
